Hanoi Bat Trang Pottery Motorbike Tour with Female Riders

Bat Trang on silent scooters, driven by women. No engine noise to drown the kiln.

Ride pillion with the Green Sisters, our team of Hanoi female riders in ao dai, out to Bat Trang pottery village — same route and workshop as our scooter tour, but with a woman host.

Quick answer

The Hanoi Bat Trang Pottery Motorbike Tour with Female Riders is a 4–4.5 hour ride on silent electric scooters driven by Vietnamese women in áo dài. The route crosses the Red River to the 700-year-old pottery village of Bát Tràng, with a tea visit in a traditional house, a hands-on pottery wheel session, and the Bat Trang ceramic market. Group $60, private $85. Operated by Eco Trip Asia.

Why we built this tour

The jeep tour to Bát Tràng works and has worked for years. The question we got asked often enough to act on was: can we do the same thing with the quiet of the female-rider line instead of the engine of the jeep? Yes — and the answer turned out to be better in some ways. The silence of an electric scooter arriving at a pottery village matches the mood of a pottery village. The jeep is louder than the kiln.

The route is the same as our Bát Tràng jeep tour: across the Chương Dương Bridge, through the farmland that becomes a kiln village, to the family house that has trained potters in our neighbourhood for five generations. The difference is the vehicle, the rider, and the softness of the arrival.

Smaller groups than the jeep version. Longer time at the family's house, usually. A different conversation on the way back, because your rider's own grandmother was a potter.

What this tour means

Craft and quiet go together. Bát Tràng pottery has survived seven hundred years not because the village markets it well but because the families inside it have never stopped. Arriving on a near-silent scooter driven by a woman who grew up visiting these same houses with her grandmother is a particular kind of arrival. The potter looks up. The conversation starts differently.

You will throw a pot at the wheel if you want. Nobody will tell you yours is good. Everyone will tell you it is yours. The potter's children will probably help you unstick it.

The experience

The scooter ride out takes about forty-five minutes, and the bridge over the Red River is the prettiest part of it. On a sunny day you can see the working boats below. On a wet-season day there is a mist that photographs well. You arrive at the family house smelling like road wind and kiln.

About ninety minutes at the house: tea, the explanation, the wheel, the small showroom. Then the market, with your guide, who knows which stalls price fairly. Most guests buy at least one piece. Nobody feels pressured.

A day in the life

Minute-by-minute, in the order it happens.

  1. Traditional house — Tea and mung bean cakes with residents in an old Bat Trang home.
  2. Ceramic market — Browse everything from tableware to art pieces and meet the vendors.
  3. Lo Bau kiln & pottery class — See the old wood-fired kiln, then make your own piece on the wheel.
  4. Old village walk — Explore the communal house and brick lanes and watch artisans at work.
  5. Banh Cuon lunch & return — Enjoy steamed rice rolls with pork and mushroom, then ride back to Hanoi.

Who it's for — and who it isn't

Yes, this is for you if…

  • Travellers interested in craft and traditional Vietnamese daily life
  • Guests specifically asking for a female rider
  • Couples who want a quieter arrival at the village than an engine
  • Families with kids over eight

Probably not for you if…

  • First-time Hanoi visitors who have not seen the city yet
  • Travellers nervous about motorbike riding (take the jeep version)
  • Groups of more than six without advance notice
  • Travellers in a hurry — Bát Tràng is a slow day

The soundtrack of this tour

Bát Tràng has the sound of a working kiln town — wheel, hiss, broom, bargaining — and the electric scooters do not override any of it. On the way out, farmland and water. On the way back, your rider telling you about her grandmother. The ride home into the city is louder, because the city is louder.

Compare with sister tours

The Jeep Bat Trang tour covers the same village in an open-air UAZ-469. The Female Riders Co Loa is a different kind of countryside day — ancient history instead of craft.
